Notes:

How is this calculated?     See SAP Values
* Superfat % means how much oils should remain in the bar of soap once saponified. Enter ALL oils used into the calculator, including ones added at trace.
** Water Discount - when making soap using HP, a water discount is recommended. Select the amount of discount you would like to use, and click calculate to get the water amount you will use. Common discounts are 10-20%
***Fragrance - Enter the percent of fragrance you would like to use, and click calculate. The amount will be calculated for you!
NOTE: If there is an oil you would like to have added to this calculator, please contact Melanie.

How We Calculate

Lye - There is a SAP value supplied for each oil. The amount for each oil is multiplied by it's SAP value. Then all the SAP values are added. If a superfat % is selected, taken from this value.
Water - Our 0% discount for water is being calculated as 40% of the total oils used. Add up the amount of all the oils you entered, and multiple by 0.40 to get the water amount.
Units of Measure - if you are measuring in ounces, everything will be measured in ounces.
Superfat - Most people superfat between 5-8%, but I would like to allow you to choose your own superfat%. This will decrease the amount of lye by that %.

Water Discount - If you would like to use less water than the 40% default, choose how much to discount by. This will decrease the amount of water in your recipe by that %.

Fragrance/Essential Oil: The amount of fragrance you choose will be multiplied by the total weight of oils in your batch. For example 4% of 100 ounces is 4 ounces of fragrance. Most fragrance/essential oils should be used at a certain rate based on the weight of your oils.
Type of Lye - NAOH (Sodium Hydroxide) is used to create a hard bar of soap. KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) is used to make liquid soap. Some people will make "soft" soap using half and half - but we do not calculate that one.
Dilution Water - This rate is not a constant, but we calculate the low dilution water to be 2 times the total oils, and the high dilution water amount to be 3 times the dilution water. We recommend adding this slowly until you get the desired consistency, whether it's less or more of what the calculator recommends.
