Lotion Making Tutorial
By Melanie Hayes

What is lotion? - Basically, it's oils and water combined with an emulsifier so it stays together instead of separating.

Here is my procedure for making lotion - it's quite simple, really.

  1. Decide how much lotion you would like to make - this is important so you know how many bottles you are going to fill. Then, use our lotion calculator to walk you through making a recipe.
  2. Measure your oils, emulsifying wax, and stearic acid. Put them into the pot.
  3. Heat your oils on low heat, until everything is liquid.
  4. Remove the pot from heat, and add your liquid ingredients.
  5. Stir with a stick blender or whisk until everything is mixed.
  6. As the mixture is cooling down (warm to the touch) add the preservative and fragrance/essential oils to the mix, and stir again with a stick blender or whisk.
  7. Let the mixture cool a bit more and stir well, then pour into bottles!

* I do not have a stick blender or a microwave, so I use the stove and a whisk. A microwave melts the ingredients a bit faster, and a whisk stirs and helps the lotion cool a bit sooner. Either way works great in my opinion - so do what you prefer. Have questions? Join RJsSoapinList and ask away!
