Swirling HP Soap
Submitted by Bren
- Prepare a batch of HP soap, using your favorite recipe. While
it is cooking, you will need to prepare your colorant if using one
of the oxides, or ultramarines. To do this, you mix it into a bit of
oil. A teaspoon of powdered colorant, mixed into a tablespoon of oil,
should be sufficient to color the portion of soap that will make your
swirl. You can also use a bit of glycerin (liquid, veg type, not glycerin
soap) to mix your powdered colorant into.
- When your soap has completed the cook period, allow it to cool down
to around 150 degrees. Mix your fragrance well into the soap. You will
then pull out the portion that you will be coloring to make your swirl.
A soup ladle to two will be enough to do this, depending upon the size
batch you are making. Put this soap into a bowl, and add your colorant
to it. If using a liquid colorant, follow the manufacturers recommendations
for usage. Mix it in well, working quickly. You don't want your soap
to cool off too much. Once the colorant has been mixed into the soap
well, scrap the whole amount back into the pot.
- Using a large spoon, or a spatula, stir the colored portion into
the rest of the batch very lightly.. just a couple of strokes. The
idea is to barely mix the colored soap in. Then fill your mold and
finish off as previously directed. When cooled, remove from the mold
and slice as usual.
So to recap.. Have your colorant ready.. You are going to be working
with your soap at a little warmer temperature. Use a light hand to mix
the colored portion in. You are going to need to work a little more quickly
so that you can get it into the mold before it cools down too much.
Happy Coloring!
